JSS Ayurveda Medical College, Anaemia Screening Program 2026

Date: 27-08-2026   Place: JSS High School, Siddhartha Layout, Mysuru

As part of the National Nutrition Week celebrations, Ayurveda Day celebrations, and 111th Jayanthi of His Holiness Jagadguru Rajagurutilaka Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji, the Dept. of PG Studies in Kaumarabhritya, in association with Dept. of PG and PhD Studies in Roga Nidan evam Vikriti Vigyan, conducted an Anaemia Screening Programme for adolescent girls at JSS High School, Siddhartha Layout, Mysuru.

Anaemia is one of the most common micronutrient deficiency disorders and remains an important public health concern, particularly among children and adolescents, with iron deficiency being the most common nutritional cause. It can adversely affect growth, cognitive development, learning and overall well-being. A recent study conducted among 300 late-adolescent girls in JSS schools and colleges of rural and urban Mysuru reported an overall prevalence of Anaemia of 49%, highlighting the significant local burden. Early screening, nutritional education and timely management are therefore essential for the prevention and control of Anaemia.

A preliminary clinical screening for signs and symptoms suggestive of Anaemia was conducted on 27th August 2026. A total of 73 students were screened, out of whom 40 students were identified with signs and symptoms suggestive of Anaemia.

Consent letters for Haemoglobin estimation were distributed in advance to the identified students, and written consent with the parent's signature was subsequently obtained from those willing to participate in the screening programme. Haemoglobin estimation was conducted on 10th September 2026, and the students were classified into normal, mild, moderate, and severe Anaemia categories according to standard grading criteria for Anaemia in children.

Among the 40 students identified during the preliminary screening, 22 students provided consent, of whom 21 were present for Haemoglobin estimation. Of these 21 students tested, 12 had normal Haemoglobin levels, while 4 had mild Anaemia, 3 had moderate Anaemia and 2 had severe Anaemia. For metabolic correction, Agni Deepana and Pachana medicines were administered to the identified children, to be followed by proper medications along with appropriate dietary advice and follow-up guidance. Nutritional counselling and health education were also provided to promote awareness regarding iron-rich foods, healthy dietary practices and prevention of Anaemia.
