Capacity Building Program for PG Guides – A NCISM Initiative

Scientific Publications are necessary to impart the knowledge of emerging trends in health care systems, to enhance professional knowledge from time to time and to share one’s own original work with the learned community. With this moto, NCISM, New Delhi had initiated a Capacity Building Program for PG Guides across India and one such Workshop on “Scientific Writing, Research Integrity and Publication Ethics” was organized by our Institution from 12th to 14th September 2024 in commemoration with 109th Jayanthi Celebrations of His Holiness Jagadguru Rajagurutilaka Dr Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji.

10 Resource Persons recognised and trained as Master Trainers by NCISM were called from across India to share their experience and knowledge on various topics of Scientific Writing across 20 sessions spread over 3 days. 60 PG Guides attended the Workshop as Delegates from various institutions across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh.

Day 1 started with Inaugural Ceremony where Dr. Santosh. L. Yadahalli, Deputy Director, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, Karnataka was the Chief Guest who in his speech expressed the efforts taken by our University to encourage Research and Publication.

Dr. Anupama Krishnan, National Coordinator, PG Guide Workshop briefed about the Workshop and other initiatives taken up by NCISM.

Sri. Mahesh. R, Director, Medical Education Division, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru was the Guest of Honour. Sir in his address congratulated all PG Guides and also appreciated the efforts taken forth by the Institution to host this Workshop. He also stressed upon the significance of publication in the present era and also involvement in Research.

Dr. C. G. Betsurmath, Executive Secretary, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru in his Presidential address gave a brief history of JSS Institutions and the Sri Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Math of Sri Sutturu Kshetra and the vast network of Institutions under the umbrella of JSS. He urged everyone to involve themselves in Research so as to contribute to the Scientific data available.

1st Session was handled by Dr. Anupama Krishnan, Professor, Dept of Swasthavritta, Vaidyaratnam P S Varier Ayurveda College, Kottakkal, Kerala. Madam spoke on Scientific Publications: Why, When and How, Scientometrics, Journal Selection, Predatory Journals, Drafting an Original article, Framing a Title, Keywords and about writing Introduction. An Ice breaking session was conducted and also an Activity to identify Predatory Journals.

After lunch, Dr. Sriharsha. K. V, Associate Professor, Dept. of Samhita & Siddhanta, Hillside Ayurveda Medical College, Bengaluru took over the next session in which Sir detailed on Study designs, Ethical issues in Research, Study methodology, Sample size calculation, SOP, SOD, Questionnaire validation and also activities on identification of study design, randomization chart preparation, sampling chart.

Dr. Vedantam Giridhar, Professor & Head, Dept. of Dravyaguna, Guru Gorakshnath Institute of Medical Sciences (Faculty of Ayurveda), Mahayogi Gorakhnath University, Uttar Pradesh spoke on Data presentation methods, Data types, arranging graphs, tables, figures, analysis and interpretation of various data types, statistical tests and also activity on right statistical test.

Day 2 started with Session by Dr. Aisha Anjum, Professor, Dept of Ilmul Qabalat wa Amraze Niswan (I/C), Dept of Ilmul Jarahat, Government Unani Medical College & Hospital, Bengaluru. Madam explained about drafting Essential components of Research article and drafting drug research based original article.

Dr. Subash Sahu, HOD & Associate Professor, Dept. of Draavyaguna, Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Ayurved Charak Sansthan, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, spoke on drafting effective literary research article and about translating thesis into article. In the activity, PG guides were made to work upon extracting research ideas for publication, various designs, materials, etc..

Next session was handled by Dr. Sumith Kumar. M, Associate Professor, Dept. of Ayurveda Samhitha and Siddhanta, College of Ayurveda, Mahayogi Gorakhnath University, Uttar Pradesh. Where in Sir actively involved all the participants on the topic of Reporting Guidelines for various types of Research activities and on Writing a Review.

Dr. Fahmeeda Zeenath, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Niswan wa Qabalat, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh handled the next session. Madam explained about the Case series and Case reports and involved all participants in using available online materials in writing them and also on Research Integrity, Publication Ethics and Scientific Misconduct.

Day 3 began with an energetic lecture by Dr. Reetesh Kumar Verma, Head, Dept. of Kaumarabhritya, Govt. Ayurveda College & Hospital, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Sir spoke on effective ways of writing Discussion and on preparing an Abstract.

Next session was handled by Dr. Girimalla Patil, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Rasashastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana, All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi. Sir involved everyone in discussion about various Referencing styles and their management system and all participants learnt the use of Zotero software. Sir also detailed on other publication types such as Letter to editor, Short Communication, Book review.

Last session of the workshop was handled by Dr. G. Subash Chandran, Associate Professor, Govt. Siddha Medical College, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. Sir explained about ways of overcoming Language Barrier, Grammar check software and the Editorial process.

This was followed by Valedictory Program in which Dr. G. Subash Chandran along with Principal & Medical Superintendent of the institution Dr. Sarbeswar Kar and Dean, Dr. Rajesh. A. Udapudi wished all participants and handed over Certificates to all the PG Guides.

On all these 3 days, breakfast, lunch and dinner was arranged to all the PG Guides and Master trainers along with refreshing beverages in between sessions. This workshop was very well accepted by all 60 participants and gave very good feedback during the Valedictory Program. All Master Trainers appreciated the efforts taken by the institution in successful conduction of the Workshop in a very organized manner.

An Information Brochure was also prepared and released during the Workshop containing all the details about the Workshop, Host Institution, Master Trainers and also the PG Guides.

The hall was arranged with 10 Round tables and all the PG Guides were grouped into 10 groups of 6 each named after Aapta, which led to easy interaction of Master Trainers with all the PG Guides and also discussions within the groups.
